Kung Fu

Kung Fu refers to traditional Chinese martial arts which combines physical conditioning, mindfulness, and practical self-defense. Kung Fu strengthens the body through dynamic movements that improve flexibility, balance, coordination, and cardiovascular health. Regular practice supports joint mobility, builds muscular endurance, and promotes overall vitality. Kung Fu also sharpens focus, reduces stress, and cultivates inner peace. 

Kung Fu is also a highly effective system of self-defense. It teaches practitioners how to respond to threats with calm, speed, precision, and control, emphasizing timing and awareness, and the use of an opponent's force against them Whether used for health, confidence, or protection, Kung Fu training offers a holistic path to well-being. 

Kung Fu Styles

At Ocean State Fitness, besides general basic Kung Fu training, we offer a couple different approaches to skill development.

Xingyiquan-Form Intent Boxing-This style emphasizes linear movement and mental development to enhance energy and power. Xingyiquan is considered an 

"internal" martial art because it focuses on inner body mechanics and inner energy, known as Qi.

Liuhebafa-Six Harmonies Eight Methods-Also known as "Water Boxing" this style utilizes smooth, flowing movement while cultivating inner energy and outer power.

Kung Fu Potential

On a personal note, I would like to share the influence Kung Fu has had on my life. When around the age of 19, I met my first teacher. I was a highly undisciplined, angry young man. Yet there was something that always attracted me to the structure and discipline of martial arts (probably because I knew I needed it!). I was immediately enthralled and spent any spare time training what I learned. I became more focused, less angry, and much healthier. I remember after a few years I felt this fire that used to burn inside of me finally extinguish. My mind became more at ease. I was able to accomplish more things than I could have imagined thanks to the self-discipline I had cultivated through my Kung Fu training. To this day I continue to study, always looking to increase my understanding and improve my skill. I look forward to sharing this transformative way of life with you.
